While studying music at Oberlin Conservatory, Nathaniel Dett was influenced by Antonin Dvorak to include native, folk-like melodies in his music. For Dett, this meant African-American spirituals and other influences of his heritage. As found in "Juba Dance," the result is fun for performers and audiences alike.
